Create a ZIP From Files in Different Folders on Mac
Collect files on Historr Drag Shelf, create a ZIP archive, and save or share the result. Learn archive naming and how to avoid sending originals twice.

The short answerCollect the files on Historr Drag Shelf, then choose Compress to ZIP from the shelf menu. The new archive is added to the shelf. Expand the list and save or drag that ZIP item to your destination. The original shelf entries remain, so dragging the whole pile also includes them.
When should you package files as a ZIP?
Finder's Compress command is a good fit for a selection already together. When the delivery spans Downloads, a project folder, and exported screenshots, a shelf can handle the collection before you create the archive.
The archive should contain only the intended deliverables. A temporary collection gives you a chance to inspect the files and remove obsolete versions before turning the selection into a single package.
What changes when an archive is created?
Packaging and size reduction are different goals. A ZIP can bundle several items into one file, but already compressed images or media may not shrink much. Check the resulting byte size if a recipient has an attachment limit.
Creating an archive also creates another object to manage. Historr adds the ZIP to the shelf instead of replacing everything with it. That makes it important to deliver the archive deliberately rather than dragging every visible item.
How do you create and deliver the ZIP?
Gather and inspect the inputs
Open a shelf and add the files or folders to package. Expand it and preview ambiguous items. If an earlier ZIP is still on the shelf, remove that entry before creating a fresh archive unless it genuinely belongs inside the next package.
Name a multi-item collection
Choose Rename Shelf and enter a useful name. For several items, Historr uses the shelf name for the archive, or Archive when the shelf has no name. A single-item archive is named from that item's filename.
Choose the compression scope
Use Compress to ZIP from the shelf menu to include the collection, or right-click one item to archive just that item. Historr creates the ZIP in temporary shelf storage and adds the finished archive to the list.
Deliver only the intended output
Expand the list and drag the ZIP entry out individually, or right-click that archive and use Save to Folder. Drag All also includes the source entries still on the shelf, which usually defeats the purpose of sending one package.
Verify the saved archive
Check that the ZIP exists in the destination. Open a saved copy if you need to inspect the packaged contents. Keep that durable copy before quitting Historr, because the shelf-generated archive is temporary.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a ZIP to guarantee a smaller attachment than every source format.
- Dragging the whole shelf after compression and sending both the ZIP and its input files.
- Assuming Compress to ZIP adds password protection or encryption.
Should you compress one item or the whole shelf?
- Name the shelf before compressing a batch to get a recognizable archive name.
- For a single selected file, use its context menu to avoid including the rest of the shelf.
- If a filename already exists in the output location, Historr chooses an available name instead of overwriting it.

Are source files removed after compression?
No. Compression does not remove the source entries or their originals.

The current Compress to ZIP action does not provide a password or encryption option.
Why did my recipient get loose files and a ZIP?
Dragging the whole shelf includes its remaining input files as well as the added archive. Drag the ZIP entry alone to send just the package.
